Taghrida, the birds singing, aims at exploring a tradition deeply rooted in the algerian culture: that of having a Chardonneret élégant and raising songbirds. This custom, that affects the daily life of Algerians, dated back to the dynasty of Omayaddi (700 d.c.).
The photography research tells a series of meetings with people and the gentle song of its birds.
“From every street corner you can hear the gentle and melodic song of a bird, the Chardonneret élégant, the maknin, as they call it here.”
The first meeting is called Sedhmda: the song of several Chardonneret élégant that was spreading throughout the streets was coming from his window.
The bird represents a leader, a spiritual chief able to mediate between God and man, in the path that led to the hidden truth.
Listening to the song of birds can improve mental health: it is common to feel in peace whilst hearing a melodic twitting or a warble.
Several studies say that birds songs can improve relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety.
It can also be related to evolutionary process: if there is no bird song there could be predators. We feel safe when we hear birds singing.
“My beautiful bird with yellow wings, red mask and black eyes that sings with the delicate voice to whom you can hear.”
In the 90's Algeria went through a civil war that caused more than 200.000 deaths. A climate of fear rules for more than ten years in the whole country.
During this conflict, nature and forest have been damaged. Several fires have been set to scare war parties away, these fires have damaged the nesting area of goldfinches, leaving a mark on landscapes and memories of people.
Today, Algerians are taking their own responsibilities in the disappearance of the species and therefore, they are proposing solutions to change this: they try to fight against poaching and to promote cage farming.
They want to reintroduce birds in the wild areas.
