Some of the images in the "Not a perfect time, not a perfect place" project are part of a larger body of work that I begun in 2014 in the city of Lisbon. In 2013, when I moved to Lisbon, the city was going through a period of change marked by economic, social, housing and political factors, influenced by the global financial crisis of 2008 and the austerity measures implemented in Portugal by the Troika, the international financial assistance program. Unemployment reached high levels, especially among young people, leading many to emigrate in search of better conditions. Social inequalities have deepened, particularly affecting the middle class and the most vulnerable families.
This project aims to reflect on some of the current tensions in our society. Real estate speculation attracts large foreign investments, while the growth of tourism, local accommodation and construction focused on the luxury market has contributed to increasing gentrification. Many Lisboners continue to leave the city because of the high costs, looking for alternatives on the outskirts, while young people face enormous difficulties in renting or buying a home, ending up living with their parents, and continuing to struggle to find their place.
