Our ancestors once traveled from India to Surinam to work as indentured servants. My grandfather, like many others, traveled with his family from Surinam to the Netherlands in the 1970s. As a result, today's Hindustani have a culture that consists of a mix of India, Surinam and the Netherlands. ‘When we grow up’ is an ongoing project that reflects on the Hindustani generation to which I belong, those who were born in the Netherlands and grew up with multiple traditions and cultures. While documenting the lives and the identity of others and also my own, I try to make the layers in our identities and the different elements that shape our identities, such as place, time, history and culture, more visible. I am using photography as a tool to visualize the world and the people around us and experiment with words and visuals to combine these elements into portraits. Creating an environment where we can see ourselves and learn to understand others.
