The history of the northern Adriatic area between the two world wars and during the postwar period is really complicated and, in order to be understood in detail, it requires extensive study. The vicissitudes concerning the eastern border are deeply articulated and Italian historiography has often turned out to be summary, with an inclination to omission.
The work tries to introduce and face a discourse regarding the concept of territorial, individual and collective, linguistic and multi-ethnic identity that is intertwined with 20th-century history both of Italy and former Yugoslavia. The project starts with an exploration of the material collected by my Istrian grandfather’s family and it is going to develop over time to also include extrafamilial material, which will allow to shed light on further aspects of the history around the Balkans line.
