Dieter Van Caneghem is researching the use of photography on the representation of the architectural landscape. In his investigation he walks the line between reality and fiction, authenticity and imaginary of the photographic medium. Based on this method Dieter creates reflections on the conception, planning, construction and representation of space in its form and in its contents. With his series ‘TEMPORARY ENCOUNTERS’, Van Caneghem registers unique architectural constructions within the urban landscape. He shows us his fascination for architectural elements (floors, ceilings, walls, roofs, doors, windows, etc). We see surprising images of (fragments of) buildings, taken at a remarkable moment in its existence. They make us reflect on the lifecourse of these constructions and the continued change of the man-made landscape. In this endless transformation we must dwell on the given time. Time has a major influence on architecture in which weather conditions, change in function, decay etc. drastically change the forms and spaces. This threat ensures that architecture is in a continuous mutation and that coincidental confrontation takes place in the form or space. Much like the Comte de Lautréamont (1846-1870), Dieter Van Caneghem has explored the beauty of interplay between these random objects (de Lautréamont did with a sewing machine and an umbrella on a dissection table). It’s these poetic moments that Van Caneghem show us how architectural elements can enter a different dialog with each other than was originally envisioned.
