The series 68,86 km/h is a radiography of Romania 2021.
I am interested to show various layers in the Romanian society. After 1989, in Romania started an economic, social and political transition. The old industry went bankrupt and many people became jobless, so they looked for jobs in West Europe where they earned money for their living and investments in Romania. Old houses were replaced by bigger and "modern" ones. The social segregation increased every year. Due to corruption and lack of interest of the Romanian politicians, the investments in transport infrastructure, hospitals and schools are on a low level. Joining EU in 2007 was an important brick in the development after 1989.
The train is for my project the vehicle I travelled with on all the rail routes from May to December 2021. The trains in Romania are not really fast because of both their age and the infrastructure condition. 68,86 km/h is the average speed in 2021.
The series is part of an editorial project. The intention is to publish the photo book 68,86 km/h in 2022.
2021 is the European Year of Rail. It is announced that in the near future, the Romanian Rail Company will go through a radical transformation in order to catch up with the EU standard of rail services.
