Mediterranean Wasteland originates from a geographical-aesthetical reflection on the industrial and petrochemical landscape located between the Sicilian towns Augusta and Siracusa (Italy). The aim of MW is to explore an unknown side of the Sicilian imaginary, far from the mainstream visual patterns. These are often polarized around two extremes: on the positive side, the touristic image of an island with an extraordinary cultural and natural heritage; on the negative one, the image of an underdeveloped country, cradle of Mafia and corruption. Despite the devastating impact on health, environment, and landscape, the consequences of the disastrous Sicilian industrial experience are unknown to the majority of people both on a local and a national level. Given to its geo-aesthetical nature, MW tries to represent, through the BW photography, an unsettling landscape experience, in open contrast with the usual Mediterranean imaginary of Sicily. Abandonment. Ruin. Environmental degradation. Toxic contamination. MW tries to show the environmental sacrifice suffered by a land in the name of the late-capitalistic industrial development.
