Nowadays Tagliamento is one of the few left rivers in Europe that freely flows from its source to its
mouth across the natural rivervbed. The absolute rarity of this river is that the whole corse is completely genuine, without any artificial barriers nor channeling works.
Tagliamento is last alpine “braided river” in Europe; the riverbed can be wide up to 3 kilometers ad is one of the most important ecological corridors in Europe, connecting the ecosystems of the Alps and the
Mediterranean.
The millennial connection that bonds the people with the river is deep and fascinating: its banks have been inhabited since prehistoric ages providing local people everything they needed, fostering the encounter of people, culture and ideas. This river steeped in history is a great source of myths and tradition and even today Tagliamento is a core part of the identity of the region, proof of the deep bond between the population and the river.
Sadly Tagliamento is concerned by two projects: the first is a big highway connecting Sequals and Gemona, the other is a dam to prevent floods and protect the lower part of the rivers.
The highway is at the “feasibility study”: it will be published at the end of 2021 after some delays due to Covid. But in May 2021 the regional government has already voted in order to obtain funds(387 milion euros) for the project.
The dam is advocated by a lot of public authorities, municipalities and private stakeholders such as tourist resorts located at the estuary of the river. This particular project would catastrophically affect the ecosystem.
In addition the studies that have been carried out in the last 30 years by a lot of researchers and specialists on the natural behavior of the rivers prove that “free rivers” like Tagliamento are safer: without barriers the river is free to develop wider and this decrease danger and speed of the water.
Moreover This river is used as “standard” in order to take back the
rivers to their original shapes, sadly most of them artificially regimented during the 19 century.
I started this project at some manifestations done to protect the river.
I asked people to do something that represented the river(in their own idea) on my photos, leaving them
completely free on how and what to do.
The project is still under development: the aim is to create a huge manifesto that stands for the bond, between the river and all the people that daily live it, and the feelings of all the people that care about this beautiful river.
