These photographs are an extract from the project Animabilia; completed in 2021, it visually investigates the complexity of the human-animal relationship from an aesthetic perspective. The feeling of wonder felt towards the beauty of animal forms is the main theme of the project; the related processes implemented by man to sublimate this fascination, the attempts at appropriation and the practices of objectification are some of the aspects visually investigated through the photographic project.
Going beyond a stereotypical conception of the animal, which sees it only in roles linked to utilitarian and industrial purposes, it can be the key to interpreting a wide range of issues: from an aesthetic perspective, we see the portrait of a humanity subjugated by the beauty of the natural world, concentrated in the attempt to capture its ephemeral beauty, through practices born in ancient times and now translated in a different way into the contemporary world.
The project consists of images taken in different contexts, including natural history museums, but also zoos, reptilariums, aquariums, private collections, taxidermy studios, animal exhibitions and exotic species breed farms.
With Animabilia, the intention is to bring out the aesthetic component and the relative practices that derive from it within the relationship with different living beings; through a rethinking of the animal dimension, it is then possible to glimpse a new vision of the relationship and exchanges involving man and nature, which are influenced not only by questions of utility, but also by factors of an aesthetic kind.
