In the lagoons of the upper Adriatic, fishermen used to build huts to store their equipment and their boats. These sheds were built on the Italian state land and were therefore illegal; local administrations however tolerated them.
Over time, dozens of buildings rose and gave life to villages. Most of those buildings were quaint and big. People called them “casoni” (big houses) and used them as second summer homes, where they went to fish, cook, and party.
A few years ago, there was a change in the building regulations and all the casoni had to be demolished. The shores were restored and naturalized, but a great historical and anthropological heritage was forever lost.
Here is my selection of "casoni".
