“We are all noble knights passing through the world caught in a dream.” (Sigmund Freud, 1883).
'The Dialogue of the Dogs' by Richard Page depicts meandering journeys through the landscape of central Spain that took place between 2014 and 2019. Inspired by the writings of Miguel de Cervantes (author of Don Quixote), the work seeks out the many ghosts that continue to haunt the empty landscape of La Mancha and beyond. Through images that allude to power, failure, loss, fallibility and misperception, a personal journey unfolds in tandem with an awareness of a history that continues to impinge on the present. This work does not seek to create an authoritative portrait of this place. Rather, it weaves a tall story full of plot-holes and inconsistencies - for places are built on subjective memories and contested histories as much they are on geographic certainties. Ultimately, this quixotic journey seeks a place which cannot be found, and a history which cannot be known.
Whilst this work presents a journey through a landscape, each picture asks the viewer to pause and consider the present, its relationship with history and ramifications for the future. This project is the result of extensive research into the region's territories. Locations depicted include historic sites of Spain's Golden Age or its 20th century Civil War, but also new urban developments, airports and contemporary economic infrastructure. Many of the pictures present a melancholic state that dwells on loss, in which the future is both open to possibility yet somehow doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past.
