The ‘cloud’ is a physical space. During this age of perpetual digital dependency, we often forget that our online presence leaves a physical footprint. With AI being integrated into our everyday existence, that footprint is increasing dramatically. When we search, click, scroll, and open our devices, we feed into what are known as data centers. Their function is to know everything about us, analyze, and sell our information, but what do we know about them? Not only is our information stored here, but the future of our existence lies beyond these lifeless walls. This series unpacks how data centers give and take our information and power. These tech monoliths supposedly exist to serve us, but often they are impenetrable to the public. And while their stockpile of information increases, so does their encroachment on our natural world.
