Officially, 12,000 to 14,000 buildings are demolished in Germany every year. However, estimates suggest that this figure could actually be up to four times higher. The lack of reliable data points to the continuing low visibility of the issue, while the associated architectural, social, cultural and emotional losses defy quantification anyway. The long-term project COLLAPSE deals with this loss and the destruction of Germany's built heritage. COLLAPSE (TU Dortmund) is a chapter in this ongoing work and accompanies the demolition of the iconic, brutalist university library of the TU Dortmund in 2024-25. The series combines documentary architectural photographs of the intact building in colour with multiple exposures in black and white taken during the demolition process.
While the documentary photographs provide context, the multiple exposures condense different layers of time and material conditions into intense moments of loss and destruction.
