As Luxembourg lovers and film photography enthusiasts, we created the third part of our “Straight Landmarks” project, Wasser_s_Turm.
We were eager to document the country’s landmarks before they disappear or are transformed by urban change, so we photographed every 77 water tower in Luxembourg. (Here is a selection of 15 of the photos we took) . Anxious to carry out a work of memory, we listed, mapped, and criss-crossed our territory.
Our photographs are inspired by «Straight Photography», a photographic practice aiming to depicting a scene as realistically and objectively as possible while renouncing manipulation. This is why our photos are taken in black and white using the iconic 1970’s Polaroid instant camera, the SX-70.
The technique allows a unique rendering that may be surprising and confusing because of small imperfections, which also serve as temporal markers.
Rather than obscuring the scene, these markers remind us that the photographs were made by a specific chemical and mechanical process. Taken together, each photograph is a unique piece.
