“By The Lake” is an ongoing project that focuses on people and places along the waterfront in Toronto. It’s a place sandwiched between Lake Ontario and the Gardiner Expressway, leaving a tiny sliver of public space for life to flourish. The highway pulses with a steady stream of cars much like the waves gently lap against the shoreline, while people carve out their own space between these ever-present forces. I began photographing this area in 2022 and was drawn to its vibrant activity of people exercising, relaxing, and simply enjoying the view. It’s an area that feels like an attempted respite from the city but one that can’t quite shake it’s concrete roots. I’m fascinated by this complex relationship between nature, city, and human activity, and specifically how this can be represented in a photographic image.
