Old, damaged, repurposed buildings. A forgotten part of town where only practical use matters. Beauty plays no role there. Remaining objects in a world that seems to want to change ever faster. Generations passed since some of them were build. Still present, still functional, yet 'gehavend' (damaged). From the moment I moved to Vlaardingen with my family, I fell in love with the small harbor area close to our house. For many years I had the idea to capture that area in images. In doing so, I didn't want to purely work in a documentary style. I wanted to show how I interpret that place. Things that are at the edge of civilization (in any sense of the word) have always been obvious and thankful objects for photography. At the same time I feel connected to these kind of places, I feel at home there and I love to wander through them alone.
When the pandemic hit in 2020, and we where all forced to stay (close to) home it seemed like the perfect time to start. On the 18th of may, I picked up my camera at dusk and walked to the harbor and started the series of images that would become:
