AT REST (CHINA, 2020 - 2023)
Invisible to most, they are in fact everywhere. Worn-out from rain and heat. Belonging to no one and everyone at the same time. Neglected, battered, and broken. Day and night, ever at rest. Small islands of calm in busy public spaces. Imperturbable, they give rest to the weary masses of construction workers, security guards, farmers, and retirees looking for a moment of repose.
Empty chairs.
A country with purpose, striving to achieve the rejuvenation of which it is dreaming, and which in its recent history has experienced social, economic, and technological change on a scale not seen before. From revolutionary fervor to economic reform and a period of opening up, and recently to a more inward looking China, increasingly proud of its achievements.
Silent witnesses of the passage of time in a fast-paced society, relentless in its pursuit of wealth, which so often is equated with happiness. In a country where high-density living in huge residential compounds in mega-city clusters is considered the norm, criss-crossed by the world’s largest network of high-speed trains, they stoically seem to reject society’s ideas of success. Idle, unproductive, and non-commodifiable - hence available to anyone for free.
