"Venice is a beautiful city but I would never live here": this is one of the phrases I have heard the most since I moved here from tourists and people who don’t live on this wonderful island. Venice is indeed not an easy city to live in, you have to deal with humidity, flooding as well as give up on many comforts. Once one has managed to overcome these initial inconveniences however, one is faced with even more grevious ones: amoung these, there is the matter of housing. Venice is being suffocated by tourist rentals, homeowners prefer to rent or focus on tourist clientele and in this way many apartments and houses that could have been intended for residents and students are redirected into this channel. City policies also do not regulate the periods when a house can be used for tourist rental. As a result, housing prices for people living in Venice have soared and many people are struggling or are even forced to leave the city for these reasons. Venice is slowly turning into an amusement park, its inhabitants are abandoning it, and the city's politicians seem not to care at all.
I have been living in Venice for several years and I too have had to face this problem. Many associations have taken direct action and spoken publicly about the issue, and I have been in the front lines to be able to document their struggles. With this series of works in a way I also wanted to come forth, many have sang or shouted to let their voices be heard, I decided to take pictures. To have the opportunity to narrate and capture emotions related to such visceral and deep needs I think is a tremendous privilege as well as a responsibility. Photography is not only a way to seize moments, it is also a way to experience them through it. Being amongst the people who shared these discomforts gave me the opportunity to create shots that could catapult the reader right there with us. Let it be the faces and the actions that tell the story. The aim is not to talk about the problem itself but to rapresent the people that are fighting against it.
