We left the mountains running away from pain and shortage of supplies, thinking about a future where we would no longer suffer. The lowlands were the places where progress would have freed us from that labor. Now we know that this was just an illusion, that we cannot live without suffering. What we saw as pain was only a memento. It was there to remind us that we were part of a bigger picture. It was and still is the key to drive us along the only possible way: living life in harmony with what surrounds us.
Some of the people portrayed in this project knew that and have always remained on those mountains, some of them discovered it during their lives and some forgot, only to come back.
They are the people who populate the Appennine where I was born, their quest is my quest.
