The photographic project “Il sapore della gramigna”, still in development, is the natural
prosecution of my two previous projects – “Domenica” and “Il sole in faccia” – which were
both the product of a research I started after moving to Madrid in 2012. The “Domenica” series
is characterized by a sense of homesickness, by the attempt to analyze a distant past – the
time of childhood, but also by a rejection. “Il sole in faccia” is instead a deeper reasoning
about the paths that life offers to us, about the changes that we intentionally make and about the
disappointment that can occur, in both cases, just by Chance.
Both the projects have as a background a feeling of loss and my difficult relationship with my
land, Sicily, and everything that began there.
“Il sapore della gramigna”, the third part of this biographic and photographic project, tells
about my return to the island and, at the same time, my need to keep observing it from a
distance. It is about my new way to relate with Sicily, a more mature, kinder and empathetic
way. About observing it with new and more peaceful eyes; about facing the ghosts that
convinced me to leave it and about accepting it for what it is: an aggressive and weedy grass, but
also a healing plant.
