'Surrounded Everywhere by the Sea' was made in Cuba during a time of optimism and change when both President Obama and the Rolling Stones visited within a few days of each other. Despite hope for a better future, the vestiges of transformative upheavals and revolutions were evident everywhere - once beautiful parks overgrown and decrepit, brutalist Soviet architecture in decay, sidewalks and infrastructure broken. The many monuments to military battles and revolutions also remind that while the spirit of Cuba is strong and resilient, trauma lies within its blood-soaked soil. My photographs of unmarked graves are a meditation on time – both small and grand. The precarious tipping point of bright white light, navigates between the real and the surreal, the narrative and the non-lineal. I wanted the harsh tropical light to be represented with a delicacy that is tenuous in nature, almost brittle.
