If you ever been on a german highway, you may have recognized a pictogram with a church on it. It's an interesting typology of our time: the highway church (dt. Autobahnkirche). There are approx. 40 of these special places of worship in Germany. The first one was built in 1958 and they are very different in size and architectural shape. The churches are placed on a service area close to the highway to offer the traveler a place of retreat, reflection and silent worship. Surrounded by a hectic environment. It is a small interruption of our daily lives looking for silence and orientation. The churches satisfy our need for security and being anonymous at the same time. A service that is available 24/7. Faith, silence, and contemplation: To-Go!
