Forgotten People

For many years we have been seeing a mass migration from the rural areas of our country to the big cities, an exodus that still seems to have no end. Small villages are a world apart, a world, that from the outside they might seem wonderful; small communities in which everyone knows each other, where all are friends and live in serenity. However the truth is that the elderly people have been left behind and have been forgotten in these small villages. This serenity does not allow you to move forward, it blocks you and so young people leave the small villages in search of fortune and new opportunities in the big cities and the only ones remaining are the elderly people, who in fact, become the living representation of a village that is dying. They are the forgotten people who die of solitude and sadness, who belong to a village that first raised them and then “ended up” forgetting them. Photo 01: Margherita (75), lives alone in the small village of San Leolino, Tuscany (91 inhabitants). Her two grown children left the village ten years ago, for work reasons. Photo 02: Enzo (91) and Loredana’s (85) Christmas lunch. Photo 03: Margherita (75), while showering, San Leolino, Tuscany. Photo 04: Andrea (53), in solitary prayer in the small church of San Leolino, Tuscany. Thanks to the advanced age of the inhabitants, in small villages, the values linked to the morality of the Christian religion, continues to have a central role. Photo 05: Luigi (92), born and raised in San Leolino. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer, he tried to escape from home several time. He is now house bound under the watchful eye of his wife (85) and son (53). Photo 06: Unmade bed on one side only. After the loss of her husband, Susanna (75) sleeps with her cat every night . Photo 07: Enzo (88), having dinner alone, after losing his wife five years ago. Photo 08: Chairs covered in plastic in the only bar of San Leolino, Tuscany. Photo 09: Susanna (75), lives alone in the small village of San Leolino, Tuscany. Photo 10: An old and unused bedroom in the village of San Leolino, Tuscany. Photo 11: A pool table that has not been used for a long time in the bar of the village of San Leolino, Tuscany. Photo 12: Enzo (88), trying to fall asleep alone. Photo 13: Margherita (74), just before getting into bed, she lives alone in the small village of San Leolino, Tuscany.
