SEARCHING HOME. GABRIELE ONERE
by Steve Bisson
«Because sooner or later, the need for something different, the desire to embrace what is other than us, that voice returns to call us. And then it means that it is time to leave again.»

I am pleased to introduce this romantic series of pictures taken by an Italian photographer shortlisted by Urbanautica Institute Awards 2020. There is something liberating, healing, useless and indispensable at the same time, in these shots by Gabriele Onere, of a rediscovered Trentino.

The meaning of home. Where does it come from, how does it take shape, how does it affect our choices as we make our way through life? What are the images that settle in us, that "structure" us? Each of us has foundations, and we must measure ourselves against them, negotiating. Focusing. What is our home? Maybe it's our memory. Where do we place our roots? Everyone has to pay tribute to their home. Driven by the pandemic, Gabriele Onere returns to his origins. In Trento. And here he finds time, a time for exploring, investigating, confronting. Often people move away from home, trying to break a bond. But then it happens to come back. Memory is a magnet. The return offers a different, more detached perspective. And perhaps it allows us to observe the true nature of things. And to rediscover the instinct.

This series is a plot of faces, glimpses, natural presences, and artifacts. A rural, relaxed, silent dimension. A slow appropriation of time. The subjects consequently acquire dignity in a patina of black and white that does not leave too much room for distractions. A suspended woman's body on a surface of water holding her breath. Footsteps are creeping into the twilight of a street. Or the peace of a forest barely disturbed by the wind. These are all moments that testify to tension, a desire to merge with familiar surroundings and understand its hidden sense of place. Gabriele Onere leaves us several images that speak of his conscious, curious, and maybe forced, searching for a home. Because sooner or later, the need for something different, the desire to embrace what is other than us, that voice returns to call us. And then it means that it is time to leave again.
